          The establishment of EDA derived from a series of stages and milestones during the last 10 years. The priority for economic development for and by the Tohono O’odham Nation started with an overall vote on a referendum by all the eligible tribal members of the Tohono O’odham Nation regarding its first per capita distribution of gaming revenue in 1997.

1997 “The O’odham Voice” Initiative:  On June 28, 1997 the O’odham electorate voted and passed this Initiative in a special election that outlined the uses of gaming revenue.  In the Initiative included language for the establishment of a 7-Member Economic Development Task Force.

The 7-Member Economic Development Task Force:  The purpose of the Task Force was to identify, define and develop an Economic Development Plan for the entire Tohono O’odham Nation by working with the villages, communities, 11 Districts of the Nation and tribal departments.
